8 Years Is Enough

James Maroney promised relief. We got higher taxes and costs instead.

Property taxes up. Energy bills up. Local control lost.

James Maroney’s eight years in Hartford have left the residents of Milford, Orange, West Haven and Woodbridge paying more with less say over their town affairs.

Affordability

Energy

Connecticut already has some of the highest electric rates in the country. Maroney voted NO on an amendment to remove the Public Benefits Charge from electric bills. As Vice Chair of the Energy & Technology Committee, three bills to eliminate that charge (HB 5028, HB 5048, HB 5080) came before his committee. None advanced; keeping your electric rates sky high.

Businesses

The Connecticut Business & Industry Association scored Maroney 67% — a D+ —  on key votes affecting job growth, affordability, and the economy. CBIA recognizes “Affordability Champions” at 85% or higher. Maroney did not make the grade.

Property Taxes

Maroney promised property tax relief. After eight years, property taxes have only gone up and will continue to increase. Families and homeowners in Milford, Orange, West Haven and Woodbridge are paying more while the promised relief never arrived.

Local control of zoning lost

MARONEY SIDED WITH PRIVATE DEVELOPERS OVER OUR LOCAL ZONING. His votes shifted housing decisions away from our communities and gave developers and Hartford more power.

  • Less local control over zoning decision

  • More developer leverage

  • Less public input

  • More strain on local infrastructure

  •

Independent Voice?

Maroney calls himself an independent voice. His record shows otherwise. From 2019–2026, on 1,398 final-passage votes where Democratic leaders Martin Looney and Bob Duff agreed, Maroney voted with them 1,395 times — nearly 100% alignment.Key examples:

  • YES on HB 8002 (statewide housing mandates that reduced local control)

  • YES on the 2020 Police Accountability Act, even while calling parts of it “questionable”

  •

And when pressing issues confront our communities, like the pervasive use of invasive technology like Flock Safety cameras, Maroney is unwilling to buck Democrat leadership and call for a special session.

Follow the Money

Maroney has called for a pause on new Flock cameras over privacy concerns. Yet his PAC, A New Day PAC, accepted more than $20,000 from lobbyists — including contributions tied to FOCUS Government Affairs, the firm that represents Flock Safety. That is not the record of an independent voice.
